하고 and 와 / 과, and / with

Pattern

[A] 하고 [B] · [A] 와 / 과 [B]

Both join two nouns, 'A and B', and both also mean 'with': 친구하고 가요 'I am going with a friend'. 하고 is the everyday spoken form and never changes shape. 와 follows a vowel and 과 a consonant, and they sound more written.

The mistake to avoid

These join nouns only. To join two verbs or two sentences use -고 or 그리고, never 하고 or 와/과.
